UPI's international footprint is growing but still limited — here's exactly where it works today, which apps and banks support it, and how to use it without surprises.

YONO / SBI Pay UPI-enabled accounts

HDFC Bank

ICICI Bank

Most major UPI-enabled banks support international transactions once your bank and the destination merchant network both support NPCI's cross-border UPI rails — check with your bank if you're unsure your account is enabled.

Supported Apps

Which UPI apps work abroad

Google Pay

PhonePe

Paytm

BHIM

App support depends on your bank enabling international UPI on your account — having a supported app installed isn't enough on its own.

How To Use UPI Internationally

Step by step

1. Check eligibility

Confirm with your bank that international UPI is enabled on your account.

2. Look for the QR

Merchants supporting UPI abroad display a UPI-accepted QR sticker, often alongside PayNow/PromptPay.

3. Scan & pay in local currency

The app shows the amount in local currency; conversion to INR happens automatically at your bank's rate.

4. Check your statement

International UPI transactions may carry a currency conversion charge — check your bank's fee schedule.
